Top tips for health in your 50's and onwards

Health is a state of mind no matter what age you are. If you think healthy, positive thoughts, you probably are. If on the other hand your thoughts are unhealthy you may find your health begins to suffer. Here are some top tips for health in your 50’s and onwards

State of Mind

First of all health is a state of mind no matter what age you are. If you think healthy, positive thoughts, think you are healthy and fit you probably are and have probably found reasons and ways how to be healthy and that it feels pretty darn good, good health is golden. If on the other hand your thoughts are unhealthy that it’s all over, that there is no point to exercise or of maintaining healthy eating habits, there is a good possibility your health will begin to suffer or that it already has.


Wear and tear

You may be faced with challenges or as we get older the possibility of wear on our bodies, so if awareness has slowly crept up on you or woke you up with a jolt and you have the will, you can find a way to regain confidence and health.


Exercise

Taking that first step is vital and to start with we highly recommend finding a good local Yoga class. It is one of the best ways to stretch away those aches and pains, stiffening body and energise yourself. Yoga not only benefits the body it benefits the mind. It will bring you awareness. You can practise yoga regardless of your physical ability and fitness level. Yoga will benefit you whenever you practice it, at the beginning of the day to set you up or at the end of the day to relax and wind you down.


Targets

The gym too a great way to find and maintain that sense of wellbeing and achievement. Set your goal, if you haven’t practiced in the past, maybe half an hour a few times a week to begin with. It’s a great to feel your body responding, energy levels rising and be it heart disease, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, being physically fit over 50 will help keep them at bay and keep you healthier and active


Running

A morning run is great for cardio, a great way to quiet the mind and focus. Either in the gym or maybe find grass to run on and you may be surprised at the strengthening results of running on the earth. A good source recently told me, set a target that’s not to hard to achieve, make a plan that will help you achieve it and then simply stick to the plan, once achieved it’s easier to achieve again and again


Diet food and Nutrition

Saturated fats are bad for your arteries and heart we all know that by now don’t we? A good diet is essential for good health is obvious right? So try eating less red meat, try a vegetarian meal now and again cut down on sugars and snacks a change of diet combined with exercise will almost certainly help drop your weight.


Cooking at home

We most certainly advocate cooking at home creating tasty healthy dishes that will give you a sense of well-being. Cooking for yourself is one of the best ways to focus your mind and it really isn’t that hard or time consuming, so occupy yourself with this idea. The great Thomas Edison said “The Doctor of the future will interest his patients with the care of the human frame in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition” we couldn’t agree more


Meditation & Mindfulness Relaxation

The word meditation can be off-putting sounding unattainable and exotic but don’t be put off. Meditation is simply learning to be quiet and with practice a person can learn to become quiet at will. Join a weekly meditation group or two weekly, don’t make it a pressure, make some time, make it a pleasure, then practice for a few minutes each day when you get home, you’ll find it deeply rewarding


Company, social life and leisure

Doing Hypnotherapy in Exeter Teignmouth and around the UK we have found that for many people loneliness can be the most debilitating of all, spiraling down into unhappiness and unhealthiness. There are so many activities out there now from the yoga and meditation classes mentioned, to cycling, walking groups and exercise ‘boot camps’ you may have seen in your local park. It doesn’t all have to be gym and exercise focus either, other the top tips for health in your 50’s and over are things like line dancing which are great fun and easily available, ballroom dancing too, great ways to exercise and loose weight but most of all great ways to meet people and just enjoy yourself; there are also simple things like book groups, craft groups, painting and photography to name just a few. It doesn’t have to cost anything and all these things take us out of ourselves and put us in contact with others


A sense of purpose

All of the above have a snowball effect. We all need a sense of purpose,

we all need something to get up for, to live for, use the creativity that

you were born with, as you move into your 50’s and 60’s chances are you have the time you have perhaps always wished for.
